Du ring the v oyage, she meets Millan d, a charming though d angerous ra scal who is wa nted by police in conn ection with some unsavory dealings . Milland co ntracts malaria while onboard t he ship and Todd nurses him back to health. I n London, Todd settles i nto her ho me, taking i n boarders to make ends m eet. Milland ar rives, moves in, and proclaims his love for her. Todd is thrill ed, but i t seems rather obvious that Mi lland is o nly toying w ith her. Mi lland finds som e letters wri tten to her by her fri end, Fitzgera ld, in which Fitz gerald reveals some of her sexual ind iscreti ons. Si nce Fitzgerald is now married to the wealth y Huntley, Milland beli eves he c an use the l etters t o blackmail Fi tzgerald. To dd&# 39;s lov e for Milla nd is so great that sh e goes along with the plan. Huntley, h owever, lear ns of the sc heme and also u ncovers details of Milland&am p;#39;s shady p ast. Fear ing for her love r&#39 ;s safet y, Todd poi sons Huntley , then remains sil ent when Fitzgera ld is arreste d for the murder. Mill and has by no w genui nely fallen in love with Todd and the two make plans to l eave Englan d. Befor e they can de part, one of M illand& amp;#39;s former lov ers shows up and Todd, in a jea lous rage, k ills Mill and, th en turns h erself into the police. This is a n intriguing film, alt hough a little on t he talky side. The performances ar e excellen t throughou t, with M illand shinin g as th e cad, th e type of role in which he exce lled. Thou gh he spent mos t of his tim e making films in the US, he occ asionall y return ed to h is nati ve England for a prod uction an d this was hi s first Bri tish fil m since F RENCH WITH OUT TEARS in 19 39. Dir ector Allen was also an Engl ishman who cho se to wo rk in the US, t his bein g his first directorial e ffort i n his homeland.
